Meet Dave and Lesley! Dave and Lesley Smith are what you call fly fishing's "power couple". Both grew up in Southern California with childhood adventures filled with camping, hiking, and fishing in the Eastern Sierras. After University, Dave had an opportunity to move to New Zealand for work and found his deep passion and love for fly fishing. He’s been a competition trout angler since 2012, with appearances nationally at two Team USA National Championships, America’s Cup international competition, and many regional events throughout the western United States. In addition, Dave was on the Professional Fly Angling tour in 2014 and has competed internationally in New Zealand including the Oceania Fly Fishing Championships in 2012. Lesley's journey after university was more by foot and she became an accomplished backpacker with multiple thru-hikes of the John Muir Trail and 550 miles of Spain’s El Camino de Santiago under her belt. Finally, in 2015 Dave and Lesley's paths crossed and their mutual love for the outdoors was a match made in heaven. Dave taught Lesley to fly fish and she caught a brown trout on her first cast. Lesley was hooked on the sport and Dave would say he was hooked on Lesley. Since then, Dave and Lesley have become a multi-species fly anglers and fly tiers who chase everything all over the world from alpine trout to Belizean bonefish, carp and mako sharks. Lesley's fly fishing skills even led her to become a team member of the very first Women’s USA fly fishing team. Both anglers love to give back to the sport that has given them so much. Helping at clinics, giving presentations, and volunteering for tying classes is just a short list of how they have done this.
